What Is Spinal Cord Stimulation (Abbott SCS) Therapy?
Non Coded | 1781862044
This video is intended to help you get ready for the implant procedure and for life with the Abbott Spinal Cord Stimulation, or SCS, device. There are two different types of leads that may be placed during the implant procedure, percutaneous leads or paddle leads. Only your doctor can determine the best lead type for you.
The process of receiving an Abbott SCS device begins with a short outpatient procedure. Much like the temporary system, the three basic components of the implanted system will be familiar to you. A set of leads, either percutaneous or paddle, a battery, and a patient controller. Let's take a closer look at the procedure.
At the start of the procedure, you will be positioned on the operating room table. Once you are comfortable, the doctor will place thin wires called leads into the epidural space. The exact position of the leads will depend on where your pain is located.
Next, the doctor will create a space to place the battery, usually along the abdomen or buttock area. Your doctor will speak to you prior to the procedure to determine any placement preferences. The leads are connected to the battery and then the battery is placed under the skin. When the procedure is completed, you will be taken to a recovery room to rest.
In the recovery room, your Abbott representative will program your system under the supervision of your doctor. For a few days after the procedure, you may have some temporary minor discomfort in the areas where the leads and battery were placed. This will fade over time.
You should avoid bending, twisting, stretching, or lifting objects over five pounds for six to eight weeks post implantation. An essential benefit to the Abbott SCS therapy is that the batterry connects via Bluetooth to a proprietary app that can be downloaded to your personal compatible mobile device or one provided by Abbott. This empowers you to control and customize your therapy under the supervision of your doctor.
Your Abbott representative will instruct you how to navigate the app at the end of your procedure. You're not alone in this process. Along with your physician, your Abbott representative will be a part of your team, supporting you throughout the entire process and beyond to help ensure your success with the device.
