Should I Stop Taking GLP-1 or Diabetes Medications?

Pre/Post Procedure | 1790882421

If you're scheduled for a procedure involving sedation or general anesthesia, this is important for your safety. If you are taking medications for weight loss or diabetes, especially Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity, and similar medications, please pay close attention.

These medications can slow how quickly your stomach empties, meaning food remains in your stomach longer than normal. During sedation or anesthesia, this increases the risk of vomiting or aspiration, a condition where stomach contents enter the lungs. This is a serious concern and can lead to complications such as pneumonia.

To reduce these risks, you may be instructed to temporarily stop your medication prior to your procedure. If you take a daily medication, you may be asked to hold it on the day of your procedure. If you take a weekly injection, you may be asked to skip your dose for a full week before your procedure. If you are not receiving sedation or anesthesia, you may not need to stop these medications. Always follow the instructions given by your care team.

If you're on insulin or other diabetes medications, consult with your prescribing provider for a safe plan and don't alter your regimen independently. Your care team prioritizes your safety and will offer tailored guidance. For any uncertainties, reach out to them before your procedure to ensure everything proceeds smoothly.
